Nate (Nathan Keir) Edel is an experienced Engineering Manager currently leading the Confluence Cloud Developer Experience team at Atlassian. With over 20 years of experience in Software Engineering, primarily with Java enterprise and back-end cloud applications, Nate has developed extensive expertise in infrastructure, back-end, and business logic development. He also has 25+ years of experience working with Linux as a user, developer, and administrator, and has a strong background in performance tuning/debugging performance problems in Java/JVM applications. Nate has 2 years of engineering management experience, leading an internal-facing developer-productivity team supporting around 250 engineers on Confluence Cloud. He has also served as a tech lead on two devops/developer-experience/tooling teams and has academic and startup experience working with file systems, low-level storage, and kernel/VFS. Additionally, he has familiarity with server and storage hardware, including some purchasing/benchmarking/tuning experience. In his current role at Atlassian, Nate leads an internal-facing developer-services and DevOps team responsible for all aspects of improving productivity and ensuring quality for around 200 developers working on the Confluence Cloud product. He grew the team from two engineers to ten engineers and navigated one engineer through the SWE to Senior SWE promotion process. Prior to joining Atlassian, Nate worked as a Software Engineer at Zipcar, where he was part of a small team that built the new core fleet management platform for Zipcar. He was responsible for back-end and business logic development of services in Java and related JVM languages, building a caching and search service used by the web UI and mobile apps, and building a repository for high-volume GPS and sensor data storage and search. He has also worked as a Software Engineer at Facebook, where he focused on Java development in low-level infrastructure systems. Nate holds a Bachelor's degree in Anthropology (Computer Science minor) from Dartmouth College, an MS in Computer Science from the University of California, and completed his high school education from Hunter College High School. His tech stack includes Senior Software Engineer, Java, DevOps, Backend, SQL, Microservices, Search, infra, RabbitMQ, MongoDB, Cassandra, Mobile, ui, and Web.
